One thing I've learned is that a strategy's biggest challenge usually isn't generating returns- it's surviving the periods when it underperforms and investors abandon it at exactly the wrong time.

Absolutely. One thing is finding a strategy that systematically exploits above-average returns without involving guessing and gut-feeling. Another thing is figuring out if it also fits your personality and risk level, so you can actually stick to it in the long run.
